Remembering Johnny

Dr. Johnny F Railey II, a longtime friend of Lambda PTO, died peacefully on 10 October 2019. Johnny was surrounded by his family Todd, Brad, and Devon.

Johnny was proud of his many scholastic accomplishments attending the University of Georgia and Emory University including later post-doctoral research in virology. Johnny applied himself just as studiously to the US Patent & Trademark Office working as an examiner in group 1600 biotechnology. His extraordinary knowledge made him the best qualified for some of the most complicated and difficult virology cases. Recognizing his ability, he was promoted to the Office of Patent Quality Review (as it was known at the time). He later moved to the Central Reexamination Unit where his knowledge and skills were put to good use in a post-grant review. Johnny worked on some of the most technologically challenging and valuable patents which were reviewed in the reexamination and reissue process. Johnny was an extraordinary asset to the USPTO. His death is a great loss to this office. Johnny credited his momentum and drive in school to his parents and grandmother.

While Johnny would want to be remembered for his brilliant mind, and he certainly accomplished many great things, I remember Johnny for his wit and dark humor, his nicknames for people, his fiery politics and his very funny stories. Johnny had an extraordinary vintage typewriter collection which he referred to as “the children.”  Johnny is remembered today for his great intellect and accomplishments, but I remember him as my friend whose company I always looked forward to sharing.

Johnny’s Remembrance Memorial will be at River Farm, 7931 E. Boulevard Dr., Alexandria, VA 22308 on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at 11AM. To prepare for how many people might attend the celebration of his life, please let Marianne Pandozzi, Jean Witz or Mark Reinhart know if you will attend.

Member Recommendation: Wellness Retreats

Image of Beth Goldstein wearing shorts, sunglasses with a straw hat by her side, doing a yoga pose.

Fall forward with Grace on Oct 26 and 7th for an autumn”fire” inspired weekend retreat in Provincetown, MA, and two inspiring retreats this winter/spring in Mexico, near Puerto Vallerta.  Go to Heart’s Path Healing with Beth Goldstein for more information. I hope you will consider giving the gift of a retreat to yourself.

I did a retreat with Beth years ago- a healing your heart workshop and it was transformative. I really did heal. We did yoga bodywork, journaling, hiking, etc. She is wonderful. Her workshops are inclusive of all peoples and sensitive to their needs. She is very welcoming to all and she herself is a lesbian.

Night OUT at the Nationals

Washington's Gay Sports Connection. Team DC

Hello Nats Fans! This year’s Team DC Night OUT at the Nationals takes place on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, when the Washington Nationals take on the Chicago White Sox at Nationals Park.  Pre-game activities will begin at 5 PM, and game time is 7:10 PM. This will be the 15th Anniversary game and we will definitely have some special events as a result.

We’d love for your group to join us this year either as an “All Star Partner” (ASP), or as one our smaller groups, so we can help promote your brand/organization at the event you’ve helped us build as one of the largest LGBTQ events in professional sports.

Attached is a sheet explaining the benefits of being an ASP. Cost savings, convenience, the chance to go on to the field for pre-game activities, etc. Something new this year is that everyone who purchases a ticket to the Night OUT at the Nationals through Team DC or through our special online link will receive a 2019 Night OUT shirt featuring the Washington Nationals official logo.

Don’t worry though if you aren’t a 50+ group. We will still work with you and make sure we take care of your group as best we can with regard to ticket pricing, seating, etc.

If interested, please email Lambda PTO for more information. Go Nats!
